Ontario Provincial Police are investigating after one person was killed and four others were taken to hospital following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 401 early Sunday.

It was about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday when officers from the OPP’s Elgin detachment, paramedics and Central Elgin firefighters responded to the crash in the 401’s eastbound lanes at Iona Road in Dutton, located about a 30-minute drive southwest of London.
One person was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead, police said. Four other people were also transported to hospital as a result of the crash, all four of them having suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Three civilians and a police officer suffered minor injuries in a collision between a police cruiser and a minivan in Aylmer last week, police said.

Aylmer police officials said in a statement posted to social media that the collision occurred on the afternoon on Dec. 3, last Wednesday, and they had asked motorists to avoid the area of John and Talbot streets following the crash.

Police said the investigation was continuing and at the request of Aylmer’s police chief, the probe was reassigned to the St. Thomas police department due to a potential institutional conflict.
